I did it right this time

Monday, February 11th, 2008

I took a little time today and upgraded my WordPress install to version 2.3.3. Though some mistakes are just too much fun to make only once I managed to upgrade the site without taking it down this time.

On another note I will be talking about my favorite database PostgreSQL tomorrow at MUG. I plan to talk about the histroy of the project and then get into all the super hot new features. After that I will also shamelessly plug Penguicon.

Field Guide to Free Software Supporters

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Some of you may know that I have been using open source software for years and have been involved in OSS at varying levels for some time. At Penguicon on a few occasions I have tried to explain the varying ways people are involved in the OSS community, unfortunately I feel I have never done the job proper justice. Luckily Bruce Byfield wrote a great article about this topic worth checking out:

A Field Guide to Free Software Supporters

On a completely different note the new SuSE 11 install is looking amazing! Check out Stephen Shaws’s post on how it’s coming along:

Beer and shooting the breeze about FOSS

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

Last night was a bit more exciting then my usual dinner. I went to Buffalo Wild Wings with some folks from the local Ubunto Loco group and MUG. We where there to have some beers with Mako. It turns out that Mako was not alone, he was joined by a cool dude named Ken and Chris DiBona.

We talked about OLPC the Google phone initiative and Ken is working on some totally sweet stuff to try and make people more savvy and educated consumers. Mako was talking about mobile computing and that the user interface to thousands of application is going to have to be revamped for mobile computing.

Chris DiBona is a busy guy and it would seem a good thing he has people like Leslie Hawthorn to help keep his schedule planned. When I mentioned that he was coming to Penguicon again he had no idea.

openSUSE 10.3 and the “One-Click-Install”

Friday, October 12th, 2007

All I can say is it is about time! Now I can finally give a URL to someone, like my mother, and they can install something on Linux. I like what SUSE has done with the One-Click-Install and the One Click Install YaST Module make it all run smooth. It reminds me of how things work on windows, you download a setup.exe and double-click.

If you have not yet checked out OpenSUSE 10.3 you should. One-Click-Install is just one of the many fun things you will find. For my good friend Jorge, you can even select KDE on install :-). I am looking forward to playing with Virtualization and the KDE 4 preview this weekend.

Ubuntu and the tradition

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

Most the tech readers of this blog will see the title and assume this is about Ubuntu Linux.???? I am a fan but this is about the word more then the software that runs on computers.

I was listening to ???????The World??????? (http://www.theworld.org/) on NPR the other week driving some place and there was a great story titled: Africa report, not a great title but read the summary:

Former President Bill Clinton last month urged British politicians to adopt the South African philosophy of interdependence, called “ubuntu”. Reporter Amy Costello explains the tradition.

Listen to the report (4:10)

I think in after this much heated political season we would all be helped if the people in Washington worked to adopt this philosophy. Come to think of it, I think just about everyone would be helped if more people adopted this philosophy.
